Apparently incomplete collection of correspondence and papers of William Marshall and of members of his family, together with related papers compiled by David J Mackenzie, Sheriff-substitute of Glasgow.

Scope and Contents

William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents This collection includes the fair copy (not autograph) of Maitland’s ‘Narrative of the Principal Occurrences on board HMS Bellerophon’, and journals of his naval service in South America, 1819-20, the Mediterranean 1820-1, and 1828-30, and India, 1837-9. It also includes a number of printed books relating to Napoleon, particularly to the time he spent on St Helena. Scope and Contents Edward Theodore Salvesen (1857-1942) was the son of Christian Frederick Salvesen (1827-1911), the Norwegian born founder of the Salvesen shipping company of Leith. He was educated at Edinburgh University and called to the Scottish Bar in 1880, becoming a Queen’s Counsel in 1899. As a Liberal Unionist candidate, he unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary constituencies of Leith Burghs in 1900 and Bute in 1905. He was Sheriff of Roxburghshire, Berwickshire and Selkirkshire from 1901-1905...

Scope and Contents Alastair Mackie left his literary remains to his friend, and former pupil, the writer Christopher Rush. The collection was very disordered when Rush received it, and he has carried out extensive work in sorting and listing it, alongside his preparation an edition of Alastair Mackie`s collected poems for publication by Two Ravens Press. As well as teaching in a number or local schools, mostly in the parish of Glenmuick, Rule taught book-keeping, navigation and arithmetic to private pupils. His notebook includes accounts, lists of books, minutes of visits to the schools by the committee of the presbytery, and reflections on the events of the year. These last are mostly of a religious nature, but he mentions his own and his children`s affairs and (folio 48) the political events of 1745.
